Have you hit the “glass ceiling” so many times, it feels as if the top of your head is flat? Has your journey through the executive ranks seem to have stalled out? Are your dedication and hard work going unrewarded? Are you feeling underappreciated or misunderstood in the workplace? If so…welcome to The Club!

“This is THE place, where like-minded, executive-minded, forward-thinking women come to communicate—collaborate—and celebrate everything that it means to be a career-focused woman in a male-dominated work environment. This isn’t about ‘us vs. them.’ This is about us making a name for ourselves—taking a seat, and truly owning that seat, at the executive table—and doing so not as ‘clones’ of men, but as authentic, self-confident, self-empowered women.”

Two important reminders for executive women with LinkedIn brand building | Amanda Blesing

“Why would I post on LinkedIn? It’s all been said before.”

”Decision makers aren’t on LinkedIn, so why would I bother?”

“LinkedIn doesn’t work for me. It’s all so salesy and sleazy”

These are phrases I hear from busy executives who have yet to be convinced of the power of LinkedIn to future proof your career.

And the reason that’s so heart breaking is that not only are they all wrong (90 million LinkedIn users are senior-level influencers and 63 million are in decision-making positions and 10 million C-Level executives)

….. but I used to be exactly the same.

I was terrified of sharing my opinion on LinkedIn, so I didn’t say much at all. If I did bother to post anything, it was a sales pitch, or simply regurgitating or resharing someone else’s ideas.

My brand? My voice? My perspective? Non-existent.

And as a result my content tanked, which simply reinforced the idea that LinkedIn wouldn’t work for me.

Spring forward to 2021 and I’ve learned a thing or 20 and I’m proud to announce that my bi-weekly LinkedIn Newsletter, She Leads, just cracked 26K subscribers!!

Plus I’ve just launched my brand new online LinkedIn training course 7 Ways to Post your Way to the Top with LinkedIn to help busy executives to find their voice and step into their power with online brand building.

Why is LinkedIn important for executive women?

LinkedIn is an amazing brand building platform particularly for busy executive women with big vision and big responsibilities both at home and at the office.

It’s a time efficient and incredibly effective way of networking and brand building that’s even more important now that many of us are working remotely.

Plus, who has time to go to networking events morning, noon and night?

Most of the women I know are incredibly busy picking up the pieces in every arena of life and can’t be bothered with events that leave a legacy of a coffee/boozey hangover or feeling worn-out from burning the candle at both ends.

Instead, think of LinkedIn like a networking event all from the relaxed comfort of your couchwith three levels-

  • Level 1 – You get to connect and have one on one conversations with people in the privacy of messages. Proactively reach out and reconnect with those you haven’t seen in awhile with genuine interest or helpful resources.
  • Level 2 – Progress to conversing and debating with a few people via the comments on someone else’s post or article. Express your opinion, ask questions, engage with opinions of others.
  • Level 3 – Take the metaphorical microphone at least once every 30 days to speak to a broader audience as you start your own posting and publishing journey.

Ta da!!! You’re now being seen, heard and valued by the right people, in the right place, at the right time with powerful key messages that are in alignment with your career goals.

Congratulations! That’s the holy grail.

SO HOW CAN YOU GET STARTED? TWO STEPS

1. Take the self out of self-promotion and stay in service

How can your insights help others? How might a reader benefit from the insights that come about because of the unique combination of your experiences, expertise and the things you care most passionately about? When you take theself out of self-promotionit helps you to get out of your own way. You’ll be far less self-conscious if you’re focused on how your message improves the lives, careers or leadership journey of others.

2. Find your why

When you link your self-promotion efforts to a sense of purpose, or a cause, it gets a whole heap easier. Not only does this help executive women depress the dreadedmodesty normbut it helps keep you curious, creative and even taking more risks with the tactics you try until you find something that truly works to further your cause.

For purpose to work it doesn’t even have to be limited to something higher level, altruistic or worthy in the eyes of others, such as a cause where you give up your day job to look after those in need (as worthy as that is). It could also be a goal or vision as simple as –

  • Building your brand and confidence online
  • Posting your way into a bigger role or salary bracket
  • Future-proofing your career by building a public track record of your expertise and leadership insights
  • Educating others with insights from your particular brand of expertise or
  • Helping others to lead and succeed.

Remember, when you take the self out of self-promotion you get an extra boost. Stay in service to others in alignment with your purpose and you’ll not only depress themodesty norm, but you’ll find it easier to get out of your own way as you bolster your brand.

“I just read the LinkedIn chapter in your book and am 20% of the way through the online course. This is GREAT content!!!! Before I started with you no one looked at my LinkedIn profile. There were just 20 views a week on average. Now it’s increased exponentially and I’m getting approached to co-create content! Working on me and my brand has made a real demonstrable difference in a few months. Woohoo!” ~ Ursula, consultant

If that’s what happens after doing just 20%, imagine what else might be possible after she completes the entire course!
