Extract from Step Up, Speak Out, Take Charge – a woman’s guide to getting ahead in your career
My mum tells a story of when she was a young girl, she was considered a ‘model’ student, doing things right, properly, appropriately and well.
In fact, she was so good at doing things well, that the teacher used to seat her next to the less well behaved male students hoping her good behaviour would rub off on them.

There was one particular boy who she was seated next to because according to the teacher, he used to do his art and craft ‘all wrong’, e.g. he would paint trees the ‘wrong’ colours.
Years later my mother reflects that perhaps he had the right of it because while she has had a long and meaningful career as a teacher, he has gone on to win international acclaim as a successful artist!
It’s hard to fly by the seat of your pants when everything has to be done ‘just so’. It’s even more difficult to colour outside the lines when you need to colour in exactly right.
If you’re a perfectionist, you tend towards hard work instead of smart work, or you struggle with needing to be right, then this book is for you!
